Should I use wire or picture hooks when hanging my framed artwork?

Using Hooks To Hang Your Artwork

We do not recommend the use of picture wire for hanging your artwork. There are several problems related to this practice. The picture tends to tilt, the picture never hangs flat to the wall and the use of picture wire creates excessive strain on the mitered corners of the moulding. Use two wall hangers for hanging your new artwork. It is suggested that you position the wall hooks at an equal distance from the ceiling in your home, unless you have a clearly angled ceiling. The use of a carpenter's level is recommended to determine that the artwork is hung level. Some people have found it helpful to have someone hold the piece against the wall for them while they decide the placement; then mark the wall with a pencil where one hook will go, or press lightly against the artwork creating a slight impression on the wall and affix the remaining hook there. Have your friend place one end of the art on the hook and hold it level while you use the actual level to determine the position. Repeat the process with pencil (or the impression) described before and place the second hook.
