decorating with mirrors

Hanging a grouping of mirrors in various sizes and mouldings can be a creative way to brighten up a dark or cramped space.

Do I need glass in front of the painting?

If you are framing a work on paper (watercolor, pastel, drawing, etc.) you need to protect the front of the artwork with a piece of glass. Oil and acrylic paintings do not need glass in front of them.

Is it better to use a ´period´ frame?

Not always. It is nice to have a painting framed in its original style frame, but your decor might not lend itself to that style frame, or you just might like it in something else. Remember that framing is a matter of personal taste.

Glazing & UV Rays

Ultraviolet filtering products, available in glass as well as plastic, are recommended to protect against the most destructive component of light.

General

One should only use a mat window and back board made of 100% rag board or the lignin-free, alkaline-buffered mat board especially for preservation purposes.

Can I find the same frame for less money?

You will find that the prices can vary greatly from dealer to dealer. Like with anything else you buy, do your homework and check out the firms you plan on doing business with. Prices at ARTinaClick.com
are 30%-50% less than traditional gallery prices. Buy Framed Art Now!

How Much Will It Cost?

You can buy inexpensive metal or wood frames for under $50.00 and you can buy original ’period’ frames for more than $10,000.00. What you spend will depend on A. What your budget is, and B. How close to the artworks original framing style do you want to get?

Backings

As a final step an additional layer of sturdy, lignin-free cardboard should be placed on the back of the frame. The frame should then be sealed to discourage the entry of air.

Adhesives

Homemade starch paste is the choice of conservators.

Adhesives

Avoid commercial tapes, including those advertised as archival.

Condition

The less repair work needed, the better. Of course if you find a frame in pristine (perfect) condition - you will probably pay a premium for it, but sometimes it is worth the extra money... especially if the frame is an exact fit for your artwork.

Glazing

Always use a protective glazing, either glass or rigid acrylic.

Why should I visit more than one frame dealer?

You need to compare prices and condition of the different frames being offered.

Glazing

The artwork must not be in direct contact with the glazing material.

General

Attach artwork to the mat or mount by hinging with high-quality Japanese paper and a permanent, nonstaining, reversible adhesive.

Basics

A frame can make or break the look of a painting. It is important that you try a number of frames before making your choice -- remember, you are going to live with it, so pick something you like. At ARTinaClick.com you can choose from over 160 different frames and 60 different mats to achieve your desired look. Buy Framed Art Now!

Should I visit more than one frame dealer?

If you decide to frame your work of art with an original `period` frame, I would suggest that you visit at least two local dealers (more if possible).

Glazing - Acrylic

Remember that acrylics carry a static charge and must not be used with pastels, charcoal, or other powdery or flaking medium.

Check first

Make sure you call ahead and see that they have a frame in the style and size you are looking for.

Where To Go

When looking to frame a work of art, the best place to start is at your local frame shop or art gallery. Many have a wide variety of samples on display and remember... bring your artwork with you.

framing photographs

When framing your family photographs don’t try and use the same frame for all your pictures or diplomas and awards. It is more aesthetically pleasing to vary your frames and over time, as you add to your photo gallery, a particular moulding may be discontinued. Instead, keep the same color such as gold and mix styles or use all flat mouldings in various widths and don’t be afraid to mix wood colors.

Price levels.

There are many things that go into the price of a period frame - quality, size, condition (of both the gilding and the frame itself), make-up of the frame and the frames age.

Where do I find an antique frame dealer?

You will be able to find antique frame dealers in most large cities.

Are all frames made of wood?

No. There are many different materials used to make frames; these include plaster, plastic and metal. At ARTinaClick.com we have over 160 different frames to choose from. Buy Framed Art Now!
